Understanding Funding for Care at Home: What Most Families Don’t Know

Many people assume they must pay everything themselves. In reality, several routes often combine.

Care at home and funding optionsA home held by caring hands, with a heart and four connected support circles.

Attendance Allowance

Attendance Allowance (not means-tested) — around £77 or £115 a week for those over State Pension age who need help with personal care or supervision.

Local authority funding

Local authority funding — after a needs assessment and financial assessment. In England the upper capital limit is £23,250; your home is usually disregarded if you still live there.

NHS Continuing Healthcare

Direct payments or personal budgets

Carer’s Allowance

Carer’s Allowance for family members providing substantial unpaid care.

Wales has different rules (including a weekly charge cap), and Scotland offers free personal and nursing care for those assessed as needing it. Always request a free benefits check and a formal care needs assessment — both are legal rights under the Care Act 2014.
