Winter Safety

Winter Safety for Older People Living at Home

Cold weather increases risks of falls, respiratory illness, and isolation.

Key steps:

  • Keep the main living areas warm (ideally at least 18–21°C).
  • Check heating systems and carbon monoxide alarms.
  • Encourage layered clothing and warm drinks.
  • Clear paths of ice or leaves and ensure outdoor lights work.
  • Stock easy meals and medications in case of bad weather.
  • Maintain regular contact — isolation can worsen in winter.

Carers can help with these practical tasks and spot early signs of illness. Many agencies offer increased visit frequency during cold snaps if needed.
