How to Prepare Your Home for Safe and Comfortable Care: A Room-by-Room Checklist

A few thoughtful changes can transform safety and comfort without making the house feel clinical.

Hallway & stairs

  • Clear clutter and secure or remove loose rugs.
  • Fit motion-sensor lights.
  • Mark stair edges with contrasting tape or paint.
  • Install sturdy handrails on both sides if possible.

Living areas

  • Create clear walking paths (at least 36 inches wide).
  • Keep frequently used items within easy reach.
  • Ensure good, glare-free lighting.

Kitchen

  • Move everyday items to waist-to-shoulder height.
  • Consider anti-scald devices and automatic shut-off for hobs.
  • Keep a clear work surface for meal prep.

Bathroom

  • Fit grab rails (never rely on towel rails).
  • Use non-slip mats inside and outside the shower/bath.
  • Raise the toilet seat if needed and add a handheld shower head.

Bedroom

  • Keep a clear path to the bathroom.
  • Use contrasting bedding so the bed is easy to see.
  • Consider a pressure mat or simple bed-exit sensor.
These adaptations are often eligible for Disabled Facilities Grants or smaller council-funded changes. An occupational therapist assessment is the best starting point.
